What is psyllium?

What are the benefits of psyllium?

Psyllium husk comes from the fibre part of the seed of the plantago plant. It is high in soluble fibre, called mucilage, and when consumed, it absorbs water and becomes bulky. Psyllium husk then activates peristaltic action in the intestines and helps to clean the colon and eliminate anything that has been stagnating there. It can pull toxins out of the bowel pockets known as diverticuli.

Psyllium husks promote a healthy bowel, unlike laxatives which when used regularly can cause a dependence and a lazy bowel. This is why it is highly recommended for use when constipated.

Although psyllium husks contain only a small amount of insoluble fibre, it is not easily broken down by the enzymes in the stomach and therefore it moves into the colon like insoluble fibre.

The fibre in the psyllium husk provides food for good bacteria which helps to increase the levels of good bacteria in the bowel. This is very important for your health because this ensures good absorption of nutrients to be used by your body.

Psyllium husks can also be used for

  • diarrhoea
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • diverticular disease
  • mucous colitis

Used regularly, it will improve and maintain regular gastro-intestinal transit time.

Recent research has found that psyllium husk can help to lower cholesterol. Results show a decrease in total cholesterol as well as in LDL's - low density lipoproteins, also known as "bad cholesterol"

Research has also found that psyllium husks can help to control diabetes and stabilize blood sugar levels when taken before meals.

Due to the fact that psyllium husk bulks up when it absorbs water, weight loss using psyllium can be achieved. If weight loss is your goal, psyllium husk should be taken 30 minutes before meals and it will help to curb your appetite.

It must be mentioned that rarely, people with asthma have been known to show psyllium side effects. They become hypersensitive to the psyllium dust when preparing it regularly, eg. nurses who dispense it out of large containers. It may trigger an asthma attack when appropriate masks are not worn.

Also, it is very important that when you take psyllium husk, you drink extra water to ensure that the psyllium can move through the colon with ease. It is also best that you begin with a low dose and slowly build up to the recommended dose.
